Twist-outs are a beautiful way of showing off your natural curls and adding va-va-voom volume and style. Credit for this method goes to Mini Marley and her Natural Hair Twist-Out Tutorial that puts lustrous moisture at the heart of perfect style. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd2365hf0jY]

Step 1: Prep
Wash your hair and part into sections, parting it how you’ll want to wear it. Make sure that the back of your head doesn’t have a clear parting so that it blends beautifully when you twist-out your curls.
Step 2: Moisturise
Working one section at a time, wet your hair (we recommend a water spritzer) and work a moisturizing curl enhancing cream through it with your fingers to lock that moisture in. The legendary Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie product is perfect for this. Depending on what you feel your hair needs, follow it up or mix it with a heavy butter for even more moisture. We recommend using Mielle Organics Mongongo Oil Pomade-To-Oil Treatment or Kinky Curly Gloss Pomade. Once each section is fully moisturised, clip and repeat on the other sections until all your hair is prepped.
Step 3: Twist!
Now it’s time to start your first twist, working one small section at a time. Take a smaller section of hair, an inch or two thick. It’s up to you how slim or chunky you want your twists…the slimmer your twists, the more defined your curls will be at the end. Just be sure that all your twists are the same thickness for an even twist-out.
Just before you twist, comb or brush through your hair and work a small amount of a defining gel through the section you’re twisting to help with hold but allow your curls to bounce. Please see our suggestions for light weight defining gels below. You can use a detangling brush such as the Tangle Teezer brush or Denman type brush too to keep your hair detangled and smooth as you go.
Split the small section you’re working with into two and twist them together, starting tightly at the root and trying to keep the same tightness all the way to the end. When you get to the end of your twist, coil the tips of the strands around your finger to finish it off. Then, coil the whole twist from the base and pull out any extra product with your fingers. And voila – a perfect twist!
Repeat across your whole head until all of your hair is in evenly sized twists.

Step 4: Sleep!
It’s important to let your curls dry, so we recommend doing this overnight…and you’ll have earned a good rest after all that hard work!
Step 5: Twist Out Time!
Your twists should now be completely dry.
Before you twist them out, use a shine oil and work it through all your twists for maximum gloss. We love Taliah Waajid Shea-Coco Monoi Oil or Alikay Naturals Glazed Argan Oil Silkener which is stocked at People’s.
For each twist, separate your curls where they naturally feel they want to come apart, curling each one around your finger to combat frizz. Work twist by twist until you’re all twisted out.
At this stage, you can use a pick to fluff out your curls. Remember that your hair will naturally fluff out during the week, so you don’t need to go crazy at this stage!
Step 6: Edging Excellence!
Depending on your preferred look, you can slay your edges for that final finish.
Clip down your curls, then use a heavy gel – we love the Eco Styler Setting Gel – and smooth down / slay your edges to frame your face as you want to. Mini Marley uses a toothbrush to help her do this!
Once done, cover with a head scarf until your edges are set and dry.
