I am one of those girls who grew up thinking that if your hair wasn’t the texture of Barbie’s it was bad hair. Subliminally it was preached every day. In pics, on television…every day comments, but as I got older I realized that in my dark brown sea of naps was a beauty just waiting for me to discover.
To that end, I have been experimenting with an array of products that suit my hair texture for the better part of the last decade, and to be honest, the majority have been a failure. While they catered to who I term the “pretty haired people”, they simply did not work for me.
A couple of years ago I stumbled upon a line called Aunt Jackie’s which I thought was a knock off of another well-known, pricier brand. I liked the line, but it didn’t grab my attention long because in the blink of an eye, yet another product claiming to do great things for my 4B hair entered the market.
Recently, I was walking in town and came across a naturalista rocking a head of wild kinks. I told her how much I loved her hair and of course followed the age-old question: “what products do you have in there?”
“Girl,” she said. “A little bit of everything but the product I love the most is Aunt Jackie’s DON’T SHRINK gel.”
Because her texture was similar to mine, but a little looser, I immediately started my quest to grab a bottle, only to realize that it was sold out island-wide. I checked at least six different places only to repeatedly be told that it flies off the shelves as soon as it’s in stock.
I even did a Facebook post and came up empty…which is unusual for me! Refusing to accept defeat I knew something would materialize and then BANG…I got a message that someone had some that they could spare me to see if I liked how it worked for me.
I had planned on doing my hair that night, but I decided to wait until the morning, which can sometimes be a disastrous choice because one thing I have had to learn the hard way is that it’s not best to try new products minutes before you are heading out the door!
So with 90 minutes before work I set out to discover if this gel really works. Here’s what I did:
1. Co-washed and shampooed with another brand I love
2. Lightly coated my hair with sweet almond oil
3. Sectioned my hair and combed through Aunt Jackie’s QUENCH, leave in moisture conditioner.
THEN….my hair started to turn white! I was about to panic and started to regret using the oil but then the more I finger combed the more it dissolved and then I moved on to my last step.
4. Using my fingers I raked the gel through my hair and could automatically see my kinks and coils gain definition. I had experienced this before with other products so I was eager to see how it looked once it completely dried.
Off to work I went and my hair looked GREAT despite being damp. Although it took a few hours to dry (it is very thick), it still maintained its shape and the coils remained defined. A little disappointed that there was no elongation but I love my kinks so this gel will definitely become a staple in my regime!
