Please note that paracetemol/acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol and Calpol) are the first choice for treating pain and fever.
If you have an allergy to paracetamol/acetaminophen, your physician may recommend a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID (e.g. ibuprofen like Advil) instead. In some cases, your physician may even recommend alternating between paracetamol/ acetaminophen and an NSAID.
Why is acetaminophen the first choice?
The reason that paracetamol/acetaminophen are the first choice is because NSAIDS have the potential to affect respiratory function. This is the same reason that NSAIDs are not the first line of choice for asthma patients.
Talk to your pharmacist
Please be aware there have been some concerns in the medical field regarding NSAIDs and treating the symptoms of COVID-19; please discuss with your pharmacists in detail should you have any concerns.
See the graphic below for a list of medications to see which contain acetaminophen and which are NSAIDs.
Many products, such as Excedrin® and Alka Seltzer® Cold products, contain a combination of over the counter medicines. Please check with the pharmacists if you have any concerns.
